Oak Island Golf and Country Club

The area's most mature golf course, Oak Island Golf and Country Club is a George Cobb design, built in 1962. The 18-hole, par 72, course is set between the Atlantic Ocean and the Elizabeth River Marsh as it meaners from the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.

Landscaping includes much of the natural vegetation of this subtropical region. The course is inhabited by a variety of native water fowl, foxes, raccoons, and opossums. A docile alligator or two lend new meaning to term "water hazard.

St. James Plantation

Three of the Golf Coast's finest courses have been woven through St. James Plantation at Southport, The Founders Club, The Players Club and The Members Club courses offer three distinctive challenges to golfers at all levels of ability.

The Founders Club, the first of the three courses built in the early 1990's, is a P.B. Dye course that makes maximum use of the marsh and Intracoastal Waterway vistas of this section of Southeastern North Carolina. The final three holes play through and over a series of lakes and marshes, providing a spectacular finish to each round.

The Players Club, a Tim N. Cates design, is a magnificent 72-par layout that is both challenging and eye-pleasing, blending use of berms and bunkers with the natural landscape of the region.

The Members Club was recognized in 1996 by Golf Digest's "Places to Play" for its amenities and first class service. The course is Hale Irwin's 72-par design on 200 immaculately groomed areas. Tim Cates added an additional nine holes to The Members Club, making this a 27 hole course.

Bald Head Island

A 20-minute ferry ride from Southport brings the golfer to the prestigious Bald Head Island Club, one of the finest and most challenging courses anywhere in the Carolinas.

The island's scenic beauty is called center stage to this George Cobb design as it winds its way through the maritime forest of this island lying at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. The course features 15 fresh water lagoons and several tees atop massive dunes which overlook the Atlantic Ocean.

Carolina National Golf Club

Masters Champion Fred Couples designed Carolina National Golf Club at Winding River Plantation near Southport. The 27-hole championship course has been recognized as one of the finest courses on the Atlantic Coast. The course offers four tee placements to challenge every golfer, veteran or beginner.

Carolina National was a stop last year on the Hooters Tour. "The 18-hole championship layout features a design of innovative surprises sure to delight the pros, yet kind enough to keep all skill levels eagerly coming back for more," Carolina national management says.

The Lakes Country Club

Four beautifully serene ponds and two creeks influence the championship play on six holes at this 6,762-yard course in Boiling Spring Lakes.

Fast and tight greens make play here an experience equaled only by the striking beauty of the pine forest in which it is nestled. The layout here is very playable year-round.

Boiling Spring Lakes is located just six miles north of the City of Southport and about a 20 minute drive south of Wilmington.
